Healthy Pregnancy Weight Gain Guidelines
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends weight gain based on pre-pregnancy BMI:
- Underweight (BMI < 18.5): 28-40 lbs (12.5-18 kg)
- Normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9): 25-35 lbs (11.5-16 kg)
- Overweight (BMI 25-29.9): 15-25 lbs (7-11.5 kg)
- Obese (BMI ≥ 30): 11-20 lbs (5-9 kg)
Where Does the Weight Go?
Only about 7-8 lbs is actual baby. The rest includes placenta (1.5 lbs), amniotic fluid (2 lbs), increased blood volume (3-4 lbs), breast tissue (1-2 lbs), uterus growth (2 lbs), and fat stores (5-9 lbs).
